Emeritus Parliamentarians in Africa for Democratic Governance (EPADG) Announces Its Commitment to Strengthening Democracy in Africa
Lusaka 25/07/24– The Emeritus Parliamentarians in Africa for Democratic Governance (EPADG) is pleased to announce its registration and commitment to fostering democratic governance across the African continent. As an organization composed of distinguished former parliamentarians, EPADG aims to leverage the extensive experience and wisdom of its members to promote inclusive, transparent, and accountable governance.
EPADG will exist as a beacon of democracy, dedicated to upholding the principles of good governance, human rights, and the rule of law. Our members, who in the past have played pivotal roles in constitutional reviews and the legislation of electoral laws, will bring invaluable insights and expertise to the forefront of our initiatives. Through these efforts, we aim to support the development and implementation of robust democratic institutions and processes.
At EPADG, we believe that democracy thrives when all voices are heard, including those of women, youth, and marginalized groups. We are committed to advocating for the rights and participation of these groups in the political sphere, ensuring that their perspectives and needs are integral to the democratic discourse.
EPADG also will thrive to serve as a vital networking platform for former members of parliament across Africa, providing opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and mentorship. Our members, who are nonpartisan or inactive in politics, come together with a shared vision of a democratic Africa where governance is characterized by integrity, transparency, and respect for human rights.
We are inspired by the words of great African leaders who have championed democracy and good governance. As former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, once said, “The challenge of democracy is not just to put in place the institutions and processes, but to build a society in which the rights of all citizens are respected and their voices heard.”
EPADG is committed to meeting this challenge head-on, working tirelessly to create a future where democracy is not only an ideal but a lived reality for all Africans. We invite all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, governmental bodies, and international partners, to join us in this noble endeavor.
